HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
IBWC, founded in 1983, is a non-profit networking organization growing out of a felt need to unite women of African ancestry. Headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, IBWC has five regional offices and membership in more than thirty states and seven countries. Our networking model has its origin in traditional African cultures where the sharing of information, knowledge and services for the good of the group is a primary objective. In this African tradition, it is believed among various groups that sharing is the most important virtue of a person. During the enslavement Africans in the Americas, we continued the tradition by the sharing of food, clothing, information, and at times relatives. As we approach our annual conference with a renewed commitment to address issues that are vital to the very survival of our people, we return to our African tradition as we come together to share of ourselves for the collective benefit of the group. Join us on our journey.
