23rd Annual Conference, September 21 - 23, 2007, Portsmouth, VA
“What Do We Tell Our Daughters”
In 1984, hundreds of women gathered in Newark to address issues of importance to African American women. Twenty-one years later, the International Black Women’s Congress (IBWC) returns to Newark with a four-day agenda designed to economic issues.
IBWC members, nationally acclaimed guest presenters, and hundreds of women from around the world will gather in Portsmouth to celebrate the organization’s 23rd conference at the Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel and Waterfront Conference Center, Portsmouth, VA, September 21-23. This event is the premier forum for IBWC women to learn about themselves, discuss new and innovative strategies for improving the status of African women around the globe, and to chart our path for the next century," said Sharon Brown Bailey, Ph.D., national president.
In addition to the economic forums, conference attendees will attend a fashion show and participate in the 23rd Annual Oni Awards luncheon honoring stellar achievements by African American women in the humanities, politics, health, and culture.
An annual African Market will run from Friday through Sunday featuring vendors from around the country who carry a variety of African-centric goods.
Cost for attendance is $185 ($125 Students and Senior Citizens) and includes all workshops, the Oni Awards Luncheon, and the Sunday Breakfast Program.
The International Black Woman’s Congress was founded in 1983, “to bring forth exemplary models of African womanhood by defining ourselves, embracing ourselves and improving ourselves through social, political, and economic empowerment,” as stated in the mission statement. The more than 500 members in 10 Chapters across the continental US have supported social-political, health, and culture education throughout the African Diaspora.
